Jaguar GR1 - XX972

Although based in Germany, the Jaguar GR1 was operating out of a RAF airfield in Scotland for the duration of an exercise. In this particular low fly mission it was flying as number 4 in a four aircraft formation when poor weather forced the package to climb. Radio contact was lost with the aircraft and it was later found to have crashed 2 miles SW of Barnard Castle at high speed, virtually wings level in a nose up attitude. The pilot hadn't ejected and was killed.
