Tornado F3 ZE833 of 23Sqn RAF Leeming was performing low level interception training over the North Sea when it crashed 30 miles NE of Newcastle. Both crew members ejected, the navigator escaping with minor injuries and taken to a Newcastle hospital by a 202Sqn Sea King rescue helicopter. Unfortunately the pilot was killed probably due to drowning as a result of being knocked unconscious while ejecting. He was named as Flight Lt Stephen Moir aged 28.
