The pilot was flying the lead of a formation of three Harriers from 20(R)Sqn RAF Wittering to practice surface bombing. During the third attack the aircraft was seen to simulate the attack, pulling up and simulated the release of its bombs. The aircraft rolled right, became inverted then pitch nose down. The aircraft hit the ground near the village of Staindrop, Co Durham killing the pilot Group Captain David Hayward on impact.
