RAF Tornado's - ZE158 & ZE159 collide
Two Tornado F3's from RAF Leeming collided near the town of Wooler. Both aircraft were part of separate formations each with three aircraft and were practicing simultaneous practice interceptions when the incident occurred. The aircraft ZE158/DC of 11Sqn (callsign "Trojan1") and ZE159/EC of 23Sqn (callsign "Razor1") collided at a height of 2,000 feet with the tail of ZE159 striking the underside of ZE158.
The pilot of both aircraft performed an emergency landing at Newcastle airport without further incident. The 23Sqn aircraft was repaired at Newcastle and flew out back to Leeming on the 28th, while the 11Sqn aircraft left by road the following month.
