RAF Tornado F3 - ZE809 crashes

Flying at high speed approx 60 miles East of Newcastle, the crew of the aircraft heard a loud bang and almost instantly lost control of the aircraft. An emergency call was transmitted and the crew ejected. Both crew members were rescued by 202Sqn Sea King HAR3 XZ587 from RAF Boulmer (callsign "Rescue131") and taken to the Newcastle RVI hospital where their injuries were confirmed as slight. Both the Tornado and crew were from 11Sqn based at Leeming.

Subsequent investigations found that the accident was caused by a failure of the right engine leading to double hydraulic failure and rear engine fire.
