Sunderland Airshow wins award

Organisers of the Sunderland International Airshow, Sunderland City Council, are on cloud nine after scooping the gold award for Best Tourism Experience at the North East England Tourism Awards 2007, held at the National Glass Centre on Wednesday 19 September.

Councillor Mel Speding, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said: “Sunderland International Airshow is a spectacular event and I am delighted that it has been recognised as the best experience for visitors to this region. Also our team at Sunderland Tourist Information Centre has once again been rewarded for their efforts in providing such a first class service to residents and visitors.”

Sunderland International Airshow is the largest free airshow in Europe and one of the largest events in the North East. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to the seafront at Seaburn each year to watch thrilling displays by jet fighters, vintage aircraft, helicopters and aerobatic teams, including the world famous Red Arrows. On the ground, there's also plenty to see and do with displays and entertainment along Sunderland's coastline and an impressive arena programme.

Peter Chapman, Airshow Director, said: “Over the past 19 years, the airshow has grown beyond recognition from a small one day event to a key date in the region’s event calendar offering an action packed weekend of family fun attracting huge crowds. I’m delighted that it has been recognised at this prestigious awards ceremony.”
