G-AZLP History

Our Viscount first flew as ZS-CDT from Hurn, Bournemouth, Dorset on 17th September 1958. It was delivered to South African Airways on 26th October 1958 and named "Blesbok". On 4th January 1972 it was sold to British Midland Airways and re-registered G-AZLP. It remained in BMA service (with a short term lease to Air Anglia during July 1973) until 2nd April 1982, making it's last flight from Amsterdam Schiphol to East Midlands airport. After being stored at East Midlands airport for nineteen months, it was ferried from East Midlands to Teeside (now Durham Tees-Valley) Airport for further storage. On 7th May 1986, British Aerospace purchased the Viscount as part of the deal that saw BMA acquire new BAe ATP aircraft. The following month 'LP was donated to the then CAA fire school at Teeside. SERCO established the International Fire Training Centre at Teeside, 'acquiring' the inmates of the CAA, 'LP serving as a non-destructible cabin smoke trainer. In June 2008, SERCO donated G-AZLP to the  RAF Millom Aviation & Military Museum with NEAM acting as landlords while the transportation logistics to Cumbria were being worked out. In May 2010 Millom kindly donated the Viscount to NEAM.
